In the last week of regular season action, the Trojans tied Gaylord 1-1 and lost to Cadillac 5-2.
In their first meeting, the Trojans fell to the Blue Devils in Gaylord 1-0. Tuesday’s home game appeared to be headed for sweet redemption when Central scored on a penalty kick by Anna Wuerfel midway through the 2nd half. But with roughly 10 minutes remaining, the Trojans were issued their own penalty resulting in a goal off of a free kick by the Blue Devils. The game ended in a tie.
“We played a complete game with control and poise,” said Coach Andy Smith. “Anna Wuerfel was able to get on to the scorers’ sheet with a well-taken free kick. Ending in a tie was hard to take but the girls played well.”
At half time of Tuesday’s game, the Trojans honored 11 seniors, all playing in their last regular season home game. Caroline Komrska, Mackenzie Campbell, Katarina Fenton, Rebekah Cotton, Abby Puckett, Mary Pupel, Julia Bodnar, Riley Stratton, Marina Argueso, Anneliese Froese and Allyson Brown were all recognized with their families.
On Wednesday the Trojans headed to Cadillac for their last regular season game. Cadillac scored early, and the hits just kept on coming. Anna Wuerfel scored both of the Trojan goals – the first on a penalty kick, and the second from a beautiful shot from midfield. But the Vikings proved too much for the Trojans, defeating them 5-2.
The Trojans will most likely head across town next week to face the Titans in 2nd round district action on Thursday, May 31. West plays Alpena in the first round on Tuesday. “We’ll review footage and make some adjustments over the next week of practice,” said Coach Smith. “This will be our third shot at West. We’ve got fire in our belly and we’ll be ready to play.”
